portrait gallery of street names

Have you noticed Argentine street names that appear in city after city: Balcarce, Rivadavia, Urquiza, etc.? Ever wondered who they were? Here's a partial answer.

After Argentina gained independence from Spain in 1810, the men shown below were governors of Buenos Aires or presidents of the republic.

Bernardino Rivadavia: first president, 1826-1827

Juan Lavalle, governor, Buenos Aires, 1828-1829

Juan Ramón Gonzalez Balcarce, governor, Buenos Aires, 1832-1833

Juan Manuel de Rosas, governor, Buenos Aires, 1829-1832, 1835-1852

Justo José de Urquiza, president, 1854-1860

Bartolomé Mitre, president, 1861-1862

Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, president, 1868-1874

Nicolás Avellaneda, president, 1874-1880

Julio Argentino Roca, president, 1880-1886

Carlos Pellegrini, president, 1890-1892

Hipólito Yrigoyen, president, 1916-1922, 1928-1930

Other streets are named after liberators of Argentina. We will celebrate the liberators in a later post.
