Movie review: 'Nostalgia for the Light'
Patricio Guzmán examines three groups of searchers in Chile's Atacama Desert — astronomers, archaeologists and relatives of 'the disappeared.'
"Nostalgia for the Light" won't make you nostalgic for anything because it's not like other documentaries you've seen. A film of rare visual poetry that's simultaneously personal, political and philosophical, it's a genuine art film that's also unpretentious and easygoing.
As directed by Chilean director Patricio Guzmán, "Nostalgia" is a completely fascinating meditation on different aspects of the past and the interlinked ways we explore them. This may sound cold and distant but Guzmán's mastery of cinema means that what sounds artificial turns out to be moving in a surprising, even profound way.
Beginning with the landmark "The Battle of Chile," that country's past has always been Guzmán's subject, specifically the Salvador Allende revolution and the Augusto Pinochet counter-revolution. With this film, he's found an unusual new way to approach it, a way that goes though a very particular area called the Atacama Desert.
One of the driest places on Earth, devoid of insects, animals or birds and so arid it registers as a parched brown even from outer space, Chile's Atacama has qualities that make it an accessible gateway to the past, qualities that draw three distinct groups interested in that kind of exploration.
Because he has been interested in astronomy since childhood — the film opens with intriguing images of the still-functional 1910 telescope that inspired him — Guzmán starts with scientists who choose to study the stars from a series of Atacama radio telescopes because the area's transparent air makes it ideal for that purpose.
"Nostalgia" intersperses ravishing images of the solar system with heady conversations with scientists who let us know that by definition astronomy is the study of the past. For the interplanetary light they study has been traveling for hundreds of thousands of years to get here.
The Atacama has also attracted more conventional explorers of the past, archaeologists who show the filmmaker rock carvings by pre-Columbian shepherds that are more than 10,000 years old.
As Guzmán points out, one of the paradoxes of the Chilean experience is that, in contrast to all the attention paid to the distant past, Chile has been reluctant to confront its immediate past, to look into the large numbers of political opponents liquidated or "disappeared" by the Pinochet regime.
The Atacama plays a part in this too, because this remote desert turns out to have been a dumping ground for bodies of murdered political prisoners. And sharing the desert with astronomers and archaeologists is a third group of searchers, relatives of "the disappeared" who sift through the sands looking for remains of their loved ones.
The connections and reverberations among these three groups is the heart of this film, and it is made especially involving because of the articulate nature of the people Guzmán has chosen to interview and the way he talks to them.
"I don't like to corner the people in my films into giving me a specific answer," the director has said in the past. "I usually interview them for hours and hours without ever revealing where the interview is headed."
When combined with cinematographer Katell Djian's stunning images, Guzmán's fluid, unconventional filmmaking deftly explores surprising relationships and meaningful cross-cultural connections among these nominally very different groups of searchers. The result is as emotional as it is unexpected, and that is saying a lot.

En cuestión de ropa interior, hace unas fotos divinas.

Icebergs a 400 km. de Nueva Zelanda
Bloques de hielo procedentes de la Antártida , de hasta 250 metros de longitud se dirigen, debido a las corrientes hacia Nueva Zelanda.
Ya han sobrepasado las islas Auckland .
Las autoridades alertan a los buques y navegantes.
Por si no había bastante con los piratas, ahora hay que pelear con icebergs.
Espero que esas moles se queden por aquellos lares, total, no es la primera vez y estan acostumbrados...supongo.

Va de cambio: Lunes tormentoso
He cambiado el diseño del blog, o sea, he puesto otra plantilla.
Y como siempre ocurre, he perdido, casi, todos los enlaces a los blogs de amigos.
Procuraré arreglar eso.
Pero es que no puedo soportar ver la misma plantilla, día tras día, me aburre.
Así que, como la misión principal y primordial que tiene este blog, es divertirme.
Habemus cambio.

Elizabeth Lambert, menuda pieza
Esta "chica" es jugadora, (o era), del fútbol femenino estadounidense.
Allí en USA al fútbol le llaman "soccer" o algo así, y al rugby le dicen fútbol.
Cosas de la vida...sin más importancia, pero que enredan , bastante, a una servidora.
Sigamos, Elizabeth Lambert era defensa, y defender...defendió, a base de "castañas" su zona.
Igual la pobrecita Elizabeth Lambert, había tenido un mal día, y antes de pagar al psiquiatra, (que en USA y aquí, es muy caro), se relajó arreando mamporros a diestro y siniestro.
Hay que ver cuando se tiene el día torcido!!!

Lola Lemos ha fallecido
Si hace unos días fallecía la gran Mary Carrillo. Ahora llega la noticia de la muerte de otra grande de la escena española.
Lola Lemos, actriz, murió anoche en Madrid a los 96 años.
Descanse en paz.
Dolores García Lemos, nacida en mayo de 1913 en la localidad zaragozana de Brea de Aragón durante una gira teatral de sus padres y hermana del también actor Carlos Lemos, es miembro de una de las familias con más solera en el mundo de la interpretación española.

No os perdáis este vídeo
Aunque ya lo he pegado en mi blog de cotilleos "cotibluemos", merece el honor de estar en mi blog de cabecera.
Al ritmo de "Take My Breath Away" , (maravillosa canción de "Top Gun"), vemos un desfile de fotos de guapos que abren el apetito.
Y como es hora de cenar, en mi casa, y ya me retiro a mis aposentos reales.
Quiero dejar buen sabor de boca, en este caso a mis parroquianas, y a todo amante de la belleza en general.
Aquí sale Cruise, Di Caprio,Pitt,McConaughey,Depp,Efron,y Shawn Valentino.

Un libro para Rosa Aguilar
No falla, cuando un barco se hunde, las ratas huyen.
No me refiero a Doña Rosa Aguilar, que con lo mucho que amaba su Alcaldía de Córdoba, no ha dudado aceptar un cargo en la Comunidad Andaluza, que a todas luces luce más, valgan los lucimientos reiterados.
Porque de lucir se trata. ¿Verdad Doña Rosa?
Estando en el centro del poder andaluz, se tienen más posibilidades de medrar, perdón, quería decir servir a Andalucía.
Y ¿Que mejor que empezar por servirse una misma?, al fin y a la postre, el refranero no falla,"Ande yo caliente, riase la gente".
Que disfrute su cargo con salud.
Que la salud de IU es precaria, y vale más dejar al partido en la UVI que detenerse para intentar ayudarlo.

Quinto Montecarlo de Nadal
Menos mal que Rafa Nadal casi siempre nos da alegrías. Hoy, en la final del Masters 1000 de Montecarlo, ha logrado su quinta victoria consecutiva.
Ha dicho Nadal: "Ganar otra vez aquí, era algo que ni soñaba".
Supongo que lo ha dicho por ser humilde, puesto que un deportista con ambición, pienso que soñará y deseará ganar todo.
Pero bueno, nosotros, yo, si lo queríamos, así que gracias Nadal, y felicidades por tu gran partido frente a Novak Djokovic.
No ha sido fácil, pero el final es lo que cuenta.
Con un resultado :6-3, 2-6 y 6-1, y un poco de sufrimiento.
Otro título en la vitrina de casa.
Y a partir del miércoles, estará en el Godó de Barcelona.
